Rails Production Deployment

Production deployment and support for Rails apps on Ubuntu with Nginx, Puma, Docker, MySQL migrations, SSL, and troubleshooting.

Role: Software Developer / Deployment & Production Support

Location context: India

Overview

Deployment and maintenance of Ruby on Rails applications on Linux infrastructure including web servers, application servers, SSL certificates, databases, and containers.

Challenge

Enterprise Rails applications required stable production hosting, controlled migrations, and fast diagnosis when server or application issues affected users.

Approach

Hands-on deployment using Nginx reverse proxy, Puma, Docker services, Certbot SSL, Git-based workflows, and log-driven production troubleshooting.

Key contributions

  • Deployed and maintained Ruby on Rails applications on Ubuntu servers
  • Configured and troubleshot Nginx reverse proxy configurations
  • Managed Rails application processes using Puma
  • Worked with Docker-based services and application infrastructure
  • Configured and troubleshot SSL certificates using Let's Encrypt and Certbot
  • Performed production database migrations and troubleshooting
  • Investigated Rails production logs and server errors
  • Worked with Git branches, commits, merges, and deployment workflows
  • Diagnosed networking, firewall, port, and reverse-proxy issues

Key features

  • Linux server deployment
  • Nginx and Puma application stack
  • Docker container usage
  • SSL/TLS with Certbot
  • Production migrations and log analysis
  • Git-based deployment workflows

Technology stack

Backend
Ruby on Rails
Database
MySQL
Infrastructure
Ubuntu, Nginx, Puma, Docker, Let's Encrypt, Certbot
Other
Git, Linux shell, Rails production environment

Technical challenges

Reverse proxy and app server coordination

Problem: Misconfigured Nginx or Puma caused routing failures and downtime.

Solution: Configuration review, socket and port alignment, and log-driven fixes.

SSL and deployment failures

Problem: Certificate, environment, or migration issues could break production releases.

Solution: Certbot troubleshooting, environment checks, and controlled migration runs.
